San Diego Zoo veterinarians performed the first-ever C-section on a North American porcupine. After close monitoring by the wildlife health team, it was determined that Maizey was going to need assistance in her delivery so the team decided a c-section was necessary. The procedure was a success, saving both Maizey and her porcupette, Dakota! Today, both porcupines are healthy - Maizey is back to her normal self and Dakota is learning how to fluff up his quills and what it means to be a porcupine
