Demel, Vienna Kaiserschmarrn is one of those dishes that tells the story of Vienna in a single pan. The fluffy, torn pancake became closely associated with Emperor Franz Joseph I and remains one of Austria’s most beloved desserts. We watched it being made at Demel, Vienna’s historic Imperial and Royal Court Confectionery, founded in 1786. Once a supplier to the imperial court, Demel even served its Kaiserschmarrn to the imperial family at the nearby Hofburg Palace.

Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies in the country’s east on the Danube River. Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud. The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence. In the MuseumsQuartier district, historic and contemporary buildings display works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists.. . . . . #vienna #habsburgs #mozart #beethoven #austria
