It's hard to keep up with velvet ants... they have places to be! These "ants" are actually a type of parasitic wasp, and the solitary females roam these alkali wetlands for ants to lay their eggs in. We were lucky enough to spot several of the genus Dasymutilla while out monitoring the Amargosa Niterwort. To lay her eggs, a velvet ant will paralyze a (real) ant and drag it into a burrow where the eggs can hatch safely. Her offspring will have a yummy first meal and eat the ant from the inside ou
