Traumatic amputation of the ring finger at the level of the PIP joint and proximal is a relative contraindication to replantation due to post-operative stiffness resulting in a nonfunctional digit. Revision amputation is an option but frequently leads to decreased grip strength and a stump that is often repeatedly traumatized. Complete resection of the fourth ray with transposition of the fifth ray allows for a more cosmetic appearance of the hand by closing the gap between the remaining digits
