Atlantic Ocean excitement in Namibia’s coastal paradise

This is what happens when we arrive late to a seal. Millions of marine animals experience this. They drown or slowly suffocate to death after becoming entangled in debris that we permit to enter the ocean. This seal probably couldn't swim because of the amount of net that trapped him, and he drowned as a result. It's tragic and pointless. It is a painful testament to the urgent need for stricter regulations and responsible fishing practices to protect these beautiful creatures and preserve our o

Naude spots a female cape fur seal in a massive crowd of seals. They move in to get the target seal and Denzil manages to net it even though it was difficult to spot. Naude cuts the commercial fishing line and frees the seal. Instead of treating our oceans as a trash can, we continue to encourage everyone to take better care of our oceans. Any kind of plastic rubbish in the ocean disrupts the natural order and does not belong there. Avoid littering. FAQs: https://www.ocnamibia.org/faqs | Ocean C

Approaching from the water with the kayak catches the seal by surprise and we get that extra second to capture the seal. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to with the seal already being close to the water. Both these baby seals have been saved from fishing-related trash, which brings us back to the point that the fishing industry plays a massive role in the crisis our oceans face. #ocn #pollution #plastic #oceanconservationnamibia #sealrescue | Ocean Conservation Namibia

We spotted two entangled seals but we only managed to reach one of them on time. The other one made it back into the ocean before we could reach him, he will be rescued another day. The plastic strap was new and it entangled the seal not too long ago. Just shows how new trash enters our oceans daily and how fast entanglements happen. | Ocean Conservation Namibia

It does not matter if the hat was broken and recklessly thrown into the water, or if the wind blew it into the ocean by accident: seals do not need hats! Did you know that synthetic materials such as polyester, acrylic, and nylon represent about 60% of the clothing material worldwide? Every time they are manufactured, washed, and worn, synthetic materials lose tiny plastic fibers that end up in the environment and contribute up to a third of the primary plastic that is polluting our oceans. More and more fishing line is being discarded into the ocean, and it is tough to see in the water, so marine animals easily get entangled, and the line starts tightening, cutting, and suffocating the animal. Proper regulations should be employed in the fishing industry to Stop and Reduce the amount of fishing gear piling up in our oceans. FAQs: https://www.ocnamibia.org/faqs | Ocean Conservation Namibia

Denzil spots a seal with a strange collar around its neck. Wally pins the seal, and Naude cuts the entanglement. The entanglement was the cuff of an oilskin jacket, which is commonly worn by fishermen. Someone negligently discarded this piece of clothing, which led to the entanglement of this young seal. The fishing industry is a major contributor to the waste that ends up in our oceans, eventually endangering marine life. FAQs: https://www.ocnamibia.org/faqs | Ocean Conservation Namibia

Trawling is one of the most destructive fishing methods in use today. Its giant nets drag across the seabed, flattening habitats and scooping up everything in their path. David Attenborough's eye-opening documentary "Oceans" shows us this devastation in vivid detail. #ocn #oceanconservationnamibia #sealrescues #plasticpollution #raisingawareness | Ocean Conservation Namibia

It’s our favorite part of our work when we get to see a rescued animal run back to freedom. However, with the state of our oceans getting worse each day, it’s sad that his freedom might be short-lived. Our efforts are only a drop in the bucket. The entanglements we remove from entangled animals are nothing compared to the enormous amount of trash already in our oceans and the more trash that enters from time to time. We’re only treating the symptoms. | Ocean Conservation Namibia

Some seals are calm during a rescue. Others… turn into wriggly worms. This one definitely fell into the second category. Wrapped tightly in a loop of plastic, this seal needed help. But there’s no way to explain that. Not with calming voices. Not with gentle singing. Not with our softest gloves or our slowest approach. Because seals don’t understand the concept of help. They don’t know they’re in danger. They don’t know the plastic is killing them. They just know they’re being held. Humans have f

So many entangled seals, the Ocean Conservation Namibia team barely knows where to start. They chase one, only to find more along the way, shouting directions to each other until the rescue nets and rescuers run out. In this surreal moment, one entangled seal is already in the net, waiting to be freed, while another stands nearby as if “waiting in line” for its turn. Ghost gear, single-use plastics, industrial waste, discarded clothing: all of it ends up in the sea, and by 2050, experts warn the

Would bright-colored plastic save more animals? Maybe a few. But that’s not the solution. These young seals was wrapped in a black packing strap and a black o-ring, nearly invisible against its wet fur and difficult to detect even for trained eyes. Bright colors might help rescuers spot entanglements earlier, but they don’t fix the core issue: we’re drowning our oceans in plastic. The problem isn’t the color of plastic, it’s our reckless reliance on single-use materials, and the lack of accounta

2023 was a very successful year for the OCN rescue team. When we saved seal # 600 from entanglement we did not expect to rescue another 271 before the end of the year, our most successful year by far. We are not entirely sure how many lives we have saved in total, but we estimate the number to be /-3300. As long as plastic pollution is on the rise, we will have to deal with plastic rubbish from the past decades plus all the plastic that enters our world's oceans every day. Sadly, 2024 could very

Fishing line does what it was designed to do: catch and kill. But in our oceans, it doesn’t stop at fish. This young seal got entangled weeks before this rescue. The line had already cut deep into his skin, forming a painful, infected groove that grew worse with every passing day. These entanglements don’t happen overnight. They begin invisibly, when a loop slips over the head and lodges in the fur. As the animal grows, the noose tightens, until it slices through skin and tissue. This is the pri

Plastic is not the enemy, it has been revolutionary. However, our frivolous use of single-use plastics has created a major plastic crisis in our oceans and on land. We need to change the way we use and discard single-use plastics. #ocn #oceanconservationnamibia #plasticpollution #sealrescue

There are countless explanations for how this fishing line or any other fishing gear ends up in the ocean. As long as people from around the world demand seafood, fishing vessels will continue to be at sea, and as a result, marine animals will suffer as bycatch and through entanglements. We encourage our viewers and anyone interested in our oceans' well-being to reconsider eating seafood. | Ocean Conservation Namibia
