This amazing structure is Dun Carloway Broch on the Isle of Lewis. It's a 2000 year old Iron Age tower, but don't just skip this one if ancient history isn't your thing, there are more recent stories to be found here. Structurally, brochs are simply drystone towers (built without mortar), circular in shape with a staircase rising between inner and outer walls. They appear across Scotland roughly between the 1st Century BC and 1st Century AD. Several stories high, you find these ruins mostly in t

Broch Dun Carloway This broch tower is the best-preserved Iron Age building in Lewis, Dun Carloway was probably built in around 200 BC and may have been occupied by a local chief, as a symbol of status and control over the local landscape and resources. It was also easily defended, sitting high on a rocky outcrop, with wide views for miles around. One for your bucket list if you are visiting Harris & Lewis. . . . #visitouterhebrides #outerhebridescollective #harrisandlewis #highlands #scotlandis

Dun Carloway Broch is one of the best-preserved Iron Age structures in Scotland, located on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Built around 100 BC to AD 100, it served as both a defensive stronghold and a status symbol for a local clan chief or extended family group. The term "broch" refers to a drystone round tower unique to Scotland, particularly in the north and west. Rising to over 9 meters in parts, the broch’s double-walled construction features a central staircase and galleries with

Imagine strolling through the historic hills around Carloway Broch. 🌄 🏡 The Lords of the Isles cherished this cove, where the iron-age round tower house stood intact until 1601. That year, Donald Cam MacAuley climbed its walls to smoke out cattle-thieving neighbors. Over time, the massive stones were repurposed for fences and houses nearby. 📚 As you walk, picture an evening 2,000 years ago, while listening to Christine Primrose's lilting Gaelic song "Carlobhagh". 🎶 Born and raised in Carlowa

Dun Carloway “Dun Charlabhaigh” is one of the best preserved of all broch towers in Scotland, but it may also have been one of the last to be built, perhaps sometime in the first century BC. The story of the brochs, however, began many centuries earlier. Iron Age Status Symbols? Although their walls would have deterred most intruders, brochs were essentially defensible farmhouses rather than occasional refuges from pirates, raiders, or even neighbours. Structures like Dun Charlabhaigh could hous

Dun Carloway Broch – Isle of Lewis Nestled on a natural, rocky outcrop near the shore of Loch Rog, Dun Caloway (or Dun Carloway) is one of the best-preserved Iron Age brochs in Scotland, & a striking reminder of the ingenuity of ancient builders. Dating back to around 200 BC, this drystone tower was likely a combination of a fortress, farmhouse, & symbol of status, designed to protect its inhabitants & maybe impress its neighbours. Built without mortar, the broch’s double-walled structure once s

Dun Carloway is one of the best preserved Brochs (stone-built circular constructions) in Scotland. There is still uncertainty as to why these brochs were built, but it is now accepted by many that they were the homes and defensive forts of wealthy and powerful families during the Iron Age. Standing at nearly seven metres tall (although archaeologists estimate it originally stood at 13m), Dun Carloway is thought to have been constructed around 2000 years ago and the construction and thickness of

Between Golspie and Brora is Carn Liath or “the Grey Cairn”. This broch occupies a terrace overlooking the shore, has walls that are still 12ft high in places, and comes complete with a well preserved entrance passage and lintelled doorway. The remains of the broch are still impressive. The interior is deeper than the exterior, which remains partially banked. In the entrance passage is a cavity that was possibly used to guard the broch. And on the opposite side of the broch from the entrance is

Brochs...great big stone towers that still largely remain a mystery. Whilst staying at @no.29_ness in the north of Lewis, I took a trip to Dun Carloway Broch. What's incredible is that this tower is around 2224 years old, crafted in such a way that it only uses the weight, shape, size, and placement of the stones to hold itself up. No form of binding material is used whatsoever. I, on the other hand, struggled to build a garden fence 😂 Want to visit this Broch on Lewis? Why not join Eric on a h
