Drivers can now cruise through certain tolling booths along the Pennsylvania Turnpike as open road tolling officially went into effect Sunday.

It's a new era on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as Open Road Tolling rolled out over the weekend, making traditional toll booths obsolete.

"Open Road Tolling (ORT) is the culmination of the PA Turnpike’s decade-long journey to modernize operations on our 565+ miles of roadway," the turnpike said in a news release.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike will soon begin "open road tolling," which does away with manned toll booths in favor of regular overhead toll checkpoints that will either send drivers a bill via pay-by-plate technology,

Travelers will be able to pay their tolls without having to slow down or battle traffic at toll plazas. A series of gantries over the highway will take care of that.

The new automated fee collection system will take effect on the turnpike east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike’s open-road tolling system launches Sunday, according to a news release. The system is in place for the turnpike east of Reading and on the Northeast Extension, the release says. Open-road tolling will start on the rest of the turnpike in 2027, it says.
