Riley, 28, underwent core injury surgery on Thursday in Philadelphia and is expected to return by spring training, the Braves announced. The third baseman’s procedure is intended to fix a sports hernia and requires a few months of recovery and rehab.

“#Braves 3B Austin Riley felt lingering soreness from his abdominal strain when he worked out today. He’ll be checked out again by a doctor Wednesday, but it doesn’t look like he’ll return soon from IL,” wrote The Athletic’s David O’Brien.

Meanwhile, the Braves add another starting pitcher option to the organization off the waiver wire. According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, they've claimed right-hander Cal Quantrill from the Miami Marlins. He will pitch on Saturday when the Braves take on the Mets. He takes the spot of Erick Fedde that day.
