CHICAGO (CBS) — ShotSpotter is now offline in Chicago. The gunshot detection system stopped sending data to police at 12:01 a.m. Monday—all despite a monthslong fight to keep the technology in the city.

Hours before Chicago’s use of the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system was decommissioned, the mayor’s office announced a formal request for companies to submit information on replacement technology and said a group of both city and non-city employees has been working for months on developing alternative options.

CHICAGO - The controversial ShotSpotter system has officially been taken offline. Crews began dismantling the gunshot detection sensors Monday, despite efforts from some alderpeople to keep the system operational.

The gunshot detection technology alerts police to gunfire faster than a 911 call. Chicago Police said they are no longer getting alerts about the location of possible gunfire at all. Megan Hickey reports.
