Groundbreaking Latin music legend Eddie Palmieri dead at 88 Eddie Palmieri, the avant-garde musician who was one of the most innovative artists of rumba and Latin jazz, has died. He was 88 years old.

Palmieri, who died Aug. 6, is credited with originating Latin jazz's trombone sound. He later successfully lobbied for a new Grammy category for Afro-Caribbean jazz. Originally broadcast in 1994.
