YORK COUNTY, Maine — A sizeable earthquake was reported in York Harbor Monday morning. It was a 3.8 magnitude, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

A Ware, Massachusetts, resident said she was home and her whole house was shaking for about 10 seconds from what she at first believed was an 18-wheeler coming down Route 9.

Parts of New England were jolted by a small earthquake Monday that was centered in Maine and felt as far away as Boston, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A magnitude 3.8 earthquake shook parts of New England early Monday morning, striking approximately 7 miles southeast of York Harbor, Maine. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at a depth of roughly 8 miles, rattling the region from Boston to Portland, Maine.

The Franklin Fire tore through Malibu, forcing as many as 20,000 people to evacuate. Flames fueled by Santa Ana winds threatened iconic seaside mansions, including some belonging to celebrities, and neared Pepperdine University. The mayor called the event, “A traumatic 20 hours for the city of Malibu.”

Most recently, in 2012, there was an earthquake with a 3.8 magnitude that took place in New England. In 1638, Vermont and New Hampshire experienced its strongest earthquake in history, which had the magnitude of 6.5, according to the New England Storm Center.

It was also felt in New Hampshire and Rhode Island, a USGS map showed. The earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 happened at 10:22 a.m. It was initially reported as a magnitude of 4.1 and then 3.9.
