Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said President Donald Trump’s pause on federal funding is illegal and accused the administration of lying when it said programs that provide direct assistance like Medicaid would not be affected.

A White House memo directs agencies to conduct an analysis to ensure that spending is in line with Trump’s edicts to end “wokeness” and to make government more efficient. Trillions of dollars are potentially under review.

Though the White House took pains to walk back some aspects of the funding shakeup, the governor contends the damage was done — and the damage, as he sees it, was the point.

"Let's be clear, January 20th was an inauguration, not a coronation. Congress is given the power to appropriate the funding. The executive branch cannot unilaterally disregard those appropriations," Raoul said.

Illinois officials say the Trump Administration lied to them on what they planned to do.
