Most of the victims were pilgrims killed along the route to Vaishno Devi, a popular Hindu shrine. Rescue workers, including soldiers and local volunteers, pulled bodies from the debris after rain sent boulders and mud crashing down along the route to the temple.

Record-breaking heavy rains have caused flash floods and landslides in Kashmir and Jammu, India, killing at least 36 people. Most were on a pilgrimage.

Devotees had been trekking to reach the hilltop temple, which is one of the most visited shrines in northern India, officials said.
