Mayor Brandon Johnson is asking businesses to offer up new violent crime response tools just as his administration ends the ShotSpotter police technology deal, and the controversial outgoing vendor intends to throw its hat in the ring to continue operating in Chicago.

As of Sept. 23, Chicago is taking down its Shotspotter detection technology. Chicago’s mayor said Shotspotter didn’t prevent crime, and critics complained that it encouraged overly aggressive policing.

ShotSpotter’s days in Chicago are numbered, but some aldermen are trying — once again — to throw the gunshot detection system a last-minute lifeline as its time ticks down.
