Hamas has said it will only release the remaining hostages in return for more Palestinian prisoners, a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Netanyahu had earlier said that "Israel has not committed to a ceasefire of any kind or the release of terrorists but only to a safe corridor that will allow for the release of Edan".

Hamas released Israeli American hostage Edan Alexander from Gaza, paving the way for a possible return to ceasefire talks for the war-torn enclave.

Edan Alexander, the last U.S. citizen being held by Hamas, is being released today and will be picked up by the Red Cross.

The release had been made possible because of military pressure on Hamas and "the political pressure exerted by President Trump", Netanyahu said.
