A task force formed by the mayor has released a report detailing a laundry list of ideas for cutting spending and raising new revenue in the face of a $1.15 billion budget shortfall.

Revenue ideas run the gamut — from raising taxes on bottled water, liquor, plastic bags, and retail deliveries to restoring the $4-a-month employee head tax. Cost-cutting options include flexible furlough days that Mayor Brandon Johnson has avoided for fear of alienating the labor unions

We don’t have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said Wednesday. “That’s why my budget is going to challenge the ultra-rich to pay their fair share in taxes.”
