The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 140 points, or 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.5%. Trading was quiet through the day, aided by relative steadiness in the bond market, which has been driving much of the action on Wall Street lately.

Economists polled by Reuters expect Australia’s inflation to rise 2.5% in the 12 months to the December quarter, from 2.8% in the previous year.
